4 TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION

It’s hard to believe 2017 is winding down and a brand spanking new year is just a few short weeks away! The new year brings a fresh start and if you're like most people, you're probably thinking about an opportunity to turn over a new leaf with a New Year’s Resolution.

Did you know it's said that only 8% of people actually keep up with their New Year’s resolutions?! In addition, each year endless gym memberships are abandoned by February and at home gym equipment accumulates endless amounts of dust by the summer months. YIKES!

BUT, your odds of achieving your resolutions don’t need to be so intimidating! We have some guidelines on how you can make 2018 the best year yet and crush your goals along the way.

TIP #1: START SMALL

Start off by making SMART goals.

Measurable
Achievable
Relevant
Time-based

Hey, go easy on yourself. Keep it simple and choose your resolution wisely and make realistic goals that you're more likely to keep. If your goal is to eat healthier, make swaps to your diet by cutting out fast food or saying “no way” to alcohol and reach for fresh juice instead. Don’t get overwhelmed by the big picture. You got this!

TIP #2: WRITE IT DOWN

Go on and write your resolution down on paper. Keeping a journal of your process will help you be better organized and more confident. PLUS, looking back at your progress over the months will be rewarding. Nothing will stop you now!

Try making affirmation or inspirational quote note cards to help motivate you when the going gets tough. Keep them close by and read them out loud. Here are some of our favorites:

  1. “Believe in yourself. You will be unstoppable.”
  2. “Push yourself because no one else is going to do it for you.”  
  3. “Forget the mistake. Remember the lesson.”
  4. “Don’t stop until you’re proud.”
  5. “The comeback is always stronger than the setback.”

Kick it up a notch. There is an app for that! Have a desire to drink more water or work out more? Download an app (YES, there is an app to track your water in-take...woo-hoo!) on your mobile device to better track your progress. Some apps even have a reminder feature so you can have daily alerts sent to you for an excuse free experience!

TIP #3: THE BUDDY SYSTEM

The more, the merrier! You don’t have to tackle your resolution alone. Find a friend who shares the same goal and be each other’s motivator.

Pro Tip! Swap inspiration/affirmation quotes (see above!).

Find strength in numbers and consider joining a support group with other people gunning for the same goals. Talk it out when you need extra support and encourage one another. Make your resolution public by tweeting about it or posting about it on Facebook. Your friends and family’s support may pleasantly surprise you!

TIP #4: CELEBRATE SMALL SUCCESSES

That’s right; celebrate every step of the way. When a milestone is met, treat yourself! Be careful not to jeopardize all of your hard work. Here are some fun and safe ways to pat yourself on the back for a job well done.

  1. Get dressed up (just because!).
  2. Plan a staycation.
  3. Cook your favorite meal.
  4. Call a friend to tell them your news (it’s ok to brag J ).
  5. Help someone else stay on track of their resolution.

Remember, change isn’t going to happen at once. You may have hiccups along the way. Be positive that any goal you set out for yourself can be accomplished.
